What a Contabo VPS actually is (and is not)

Contabo’s Cloud VPS is a virtual machine on KVM. You pick a size (vCPU, RAM, disk, port speed), a region, and an image (Ubuntu, Debian, other Linux families; Windows as a paid add-on on their current lineup). After payment clears, you get login details and a Customer Control Panel for firewall, snapshots, reinstalls, and networking. That is the product. It is not cPanel unless you pay for a panel. It is not WordPress. It is not “hosting” in the brochure sense. It is a computer that happens to live in a datacenter Contabo operates.

We are not going to paste a price grid. Contabo publishes Core VPS sizes (they market a Cloud VPS 4 through larger sizes with rising RAM and disk) and term discounts that make a 24-month number look smaller than month-to-month. Those numbers move, and VAT displays differ by visitor. Open their VPS page. Read the line you would actually buy. Then come back here for what the line item does not say.

What is usually in the story — confirm live

Contabo’s current Cloud VPS marketing includes DDoS protection, a firewall, dedicated IPv4 and IPv6, snapshots (count depends on the size), and unlimited traffic with a fair-use policy. Auto Backup is described as an add-on, not as a reason to skip snapshots. 1-click apps and panels (Plesk, cPanel at extra cost, Webmin free in their current copy) exist so you can start closer to a host than to a blank SSH prompt. None of that replaces the need to patch the guest OS. A firewall in the panel is not your application’s security story. A snapshot is not a backup until you have restored one.

Core versus Performance

Contabo splits value hardware (Core VPS: enough CPU for web, mail, and general apps, priced as the cheap line) from newer, faster CPU/NVMe (Performance VPS) for workloads that are actually compute-bound. Most of the jobs in the previous guide are Core jobs. If you cannot describe a CPU bottleneck you have already seen, do not shop Performance to feel serious. You can often resize later; read their current upgrade path so you do not assume an in-place magic trick they do not offer between product families.

Region is not a vibe

Put the VM near the people who use it. A US local shop serving US customers should pick a US location if Contabo offers one on the plan you buy — they have advertised US among other regions. A developer in Europe with US customers may still want US. Latency is physics. Compliance is a separate conversation this brochure will not fake: if you have a reason to keep data in a country, you already know it; if you do not, pick for latency and support hours, not for a flag icon.

What a Contabo VPS is not

• Not a managed WordPress host. You can install WordPress. You then own updates, PHP, and the database.
• Not a hyperscaler. You do not get an infinite menu of managed databases and object stores in the same cart. You get a VM. Compose the rest yourself or do not.
• Not 24/7 phone support for “my site is down because I ran apt upgrade.” Tickets exist. Response is not a fire department.
• Not a guarantee your IP is clean. Recycled IPv4 space exists industry-wide. Check blacklists after provision if you plan to send mail.
• Not a substitute for a registrar. Keep the domain at a registrar you control. Point DNS at the VPS. Do not transfer the name into the server company as a reflex.

The first hour after provision (concepts, not a pasteable hardening script)

When the VM is up, the work is ordinary operations: log in with the credentials they emailed, change how you authenticate before you publish the IP, keep the system updated, and decide who is allowed to reach SSH and HTTP. Contabo’s panel firewall is a start; it is not the only control. Create a snapshot while the box is still empty so you can reinstall without shame. Enable the backup add-on if you will store anything you cannot rebuild from git. Put the IP in your DNS only after you have a process listening and TLS planned. Publishing A records to a default Nginx page is how you teach Google a junk homepage.

If the first hour already feels like a different career, it is. Refund windows and money-back stories are in Contabo’s current terms, not in our mouth. Use them if you bought the wrong object. The right object for a brochure is still a brochure host. The right object for a named app and a named admin is this VPS. Do not split the difference by running a neglected WordPress on a forgotten VM. That is the worst of both doors.
